Cooperative Communications Laboratory

Welcome to the Cooperative Communications Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The Laboratory is strongly supported by the Center for Advanced Technologies in Telecommunications (CATT) and the Wireless Internet Center for Advanced Technology (WICAT), two research centers at Polytechnic Institute of NYU.

Cooperative wireless communication refers to active users in the network assisting each other in information delivery, with the objective of gaining greater reliability and efficiency than they could obtain individually. The wireless medium allows nodes to "overhear" other transmissions. While traditional wireless networks ignore this overheard information and treat it as harmful interference, cooperative networking exploits the broadcast nature of the wireless channel by fi nding eff ective ways of pooling the overheard information.

The technique can help cellular networks (third generation and beyond) and wireless local area network (IEEE 802.11 WiFi) to provide much more reliable communications and improved data rate for all mobile users in the network. It also reduces interferences and power consumption.

The research of the lab focuses on the design, study and implementation of cooperative schemes in wireless networks. More particular we study cooperation on the physical layer, the medium access control layer and the network layer considering also cross layer approaches between those layers. Moreover, we look into problems related with video transmission in a cooperative environment. One of our main goals is to generate schemes that are implementable in a real environment. Therefore, we have a lot of implementation activities in our Witest Lab, click here to see our demo videos.
